Advice about severe fractures to humerus.?
3 weeks ago I sustained 3 fractures to my humerus. One is a bad spiral fracture, one runs from near to the elbow up to about 5 inches from the top of my shoulder, and the other is a small fracture to the socket head. I have been advised to sleep sitting upright and to rest and have a cast on the arm with metal adjusters. I have been told it is possible that I will need surgery to plate and pin the fractures if union is delayed.
Please could someone who is medically qualified tell me how long it is likely to be before I am healed and if I will need physiotherapy. And what it will involve if I need surgery - I have a young family and really don't want to be hospitalised over xmas. The word 'traction' has been used once by my Consultant and i'm worried this will involve a long hospital stay. Thanks for all help.
Bones can take anywhere from 6 weeks on up to heal. If your humerus is misaligned, traction is something they'll do in surgery to line it back up, and then they'll probably use a rod or plate with screws to keep it in place.
