Some TMA needs to be practiced outside the dojo for the street. I think you need to do some bag work and aggression drills so you are street ready. Kata or forms are good in class but you need to drill application.
And MMA needs it to. You need to add street moves like head butts, eye gouges, rips, tears and how to punch bare fisted etc still needs work to add these moves.
I am doing this with my TKD. Drilling these moves from a street self defence position and perpestive.
The TKD school I attend provides time for black belts to work on things like this in the Dojo. This works nicely, because you then have plenty of training partners and people can share information. The students get an occasional taste of this, but it is more important for them to get the fundamentals down. Black belt testing at all ranks over first degree includes a self defense requirement against a single armed or unarmed attacker.
